About Bear Country Preschool & Afterschool Program

A Warm Welcome From A Director With A Calling

I began my journey in early childhood education at California State University, Stanislaus, where I earned my BA in Early Childhood Development. Shortly after graduating, I received a phone call that would change the course of my life and the lives of thousands of children.

The Merced County Human Services Department had just built a preschool and needed someone to start and lead the program. My college professor had given them my name, believing I had the heart and vision to build something meaningful for young children and families. When they asked if I would be interested, I said yes — and that yes became the beginning of Bear Country Preschool. That was 1987. Thirty‑nine years later, I am still here, still committed, and still passionate about serving preschool‑age children.

What began as an opportunity has grown into a lifelong mission: to provide structured early learning, not just custodial care; to emphasize curriculum, social‑emotional development, and school readiness; and to create a warm, community‑based environment where every child is known, supported, and celebrated.

Bear Country Preschool has become a place where children feel safe to explore, families feel welcomed, and learning is rooted in joy, connection, and developmentally rich experiences. It has been my honor to guide this program from its very first day to the thriving, trusted preschool it is today.

Your Child’s Early Education Is Connected To The Community

Visits from our brave local firefighters teach kids about safety. At nearby farms, they learn about nature, animals, and where food comes from. Storytime at local libraries boost literacy and enthusiasm for reading. Experiences like these engage your child in their world and create a legacy of connection in Merced.
